The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist. After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style. An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics. Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the Latin text for Adeste Fideles: Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantes. The Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.Duration: 10.30

The Christmas festive season is a time for sharing the most wonderful stories. There are few female characters in these tales. And yet, they do exist in many countries. In Italy, Mother Christmas is associated with the Befana; in Russia with Babushka; and with Lucia in Scandinavia, Frau Holle in Germany, Mari Lwyd in Wales, and Tante Arie in France. What these women have in common is that they too hand out presents to children.The music begins with a majestic introduction that draws us into the heart of the Christmas legends. The timpani and sleigh bells then launch into a fast, joyful, and dynamic section. Finally, the music softens. A Christmas chorale is first played by the brass section, then taken up by the woodwinds. The piece ends in a hushed atmosphere, as if all that remained was a Christmas tree twinkling in the darkness.Lady Claus was commissioned by the Montbliard Municipal Wind Band, conducted by Laurent Zemp, to mark its 150th anniversary. Three Holiday Scenes - Timothy Johnson
An imaginative look at a good old-fashioned Christmas! From aromas of family favorites cooking in the kitchen, to the images of decorated trees, snow scenes, and caroling - all are a part of that wonderful celebration.Rather than just taking the same old Public Domain Christmas carols for one more go 'round, Timothy Johnson has composed the majority of THREE HOLIDAY SCENES using fresh and original melodies. The first scene opens with fragments of "Oh Tannenbaum" but quickly moves into a beautiful Christmas waltz. An "effets de neige," or "Snowfall effect," carries the luscious second and contrasting scene. In the 3rd and final scene, the phrases from well-known carols mergewith one another, creating the effect of "caroling." Finally, melodies serve as counterpoint for one another and bring this delightful vignette to a close. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to work with the Art department in creating drawings and paintings of holiday images. By means of this quite original fantasy Jef Penders invites both musicians and listeners to discover the typical Christmas atmosphere in eight different countries. We hear successively Christmas music as performed in Portugal, Bohemia, America, Spain, Italy, England and France. Despite the rather simple instrumentation, Jef Penders, as usual, succeeded to realize a colourful and extremely well orchestrated piece. This nice composition certainly deserves to be put on tour Christmas repertoire.
