Southdown - Score and Parts - Ray Steadman-Allen
Program NotesRay Steadman-Allen is one of the most foremost composers of the Salvation Army. He has over 400 pieces published and has been a most inventive and creative composer since his first composition was published in 1945. Having officer parents meant Ray grew up in the Salvation Army. He himself became an officer in 1950 and subsequently held many positions within the SA culminating in 1967 when he was appointed as the Head of Music Editorial where he was responsible for selecting and editing all music to be published by the SA. His versatility means he can compose music for all occasions and for all instrumental combinations; from Championship section test pieces to a straight forward setting of a children's song.The march Southdown represents music of a simpler nature from this great composer and was composed originally for a music school in Bolney Court. Bolney Court, near Brighton, is close to the downs in the southern county of Sussex, hence the title. It follows the traditional form of a march and will be an attractive addition to the repertoire of most types of wind-band.

Honor Bound is to be obligated by one's own code of conduct to do what is ethically right. This is often referenced in the military, but applies equally to our everyday conduct. This traditional military style march represents the dignity and worth of the individual. This is accomplished by featuring all sections at some point: a percussion introduction and interlude, trumpet fanfare, low brass melody, and woodwind lead. The notated dynamics are essential for musical contrast and the tempo can be adjusted according to student skill levels. This composition is based on the children's song 'Three Blind Mice', of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, and in different times and tempi. The work consists of three continuous, contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: The mice cheerfully set off while the original melody is presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a tuneful hymn, the wonderful praises of the life of mice are sung. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In an animated chase, the farmer's wife is trying to catch the mice. Following a stirring acceleration, she cuts off their tails in accordance with the lyrics of the song. I hope this work, with its humorous touch, will be a welcome contribution to the expansion of interesting repertoire for the lower divisions. - Bert Appermont

Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning 'Lion City'. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!
