Chalumeau on the go - Mike Hannickel

Typically bands that play at this level have some Clarinet players who are comfortable above the break and others who are not. By staying below the break throughout, this light and spirited Clarinet section feature let's you give the entire section a bit of the limelight. This is a perfect vehicle to help your Clarinet section learn to shape a phrase, and the cheerful melody let's you program this piece anywhere you like. It's also a good selection to use to take the pressure off Brasses before a particularly taxing major work. Remind the critically important Clarinet section that you value their efforts as much as any other section. Breezy!

Celtic Holy Night (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Smith, Robert W.

The holy night of Christmas is celebrated in many cultures throughout the world. Robert W. Smith gives us a new arrangement of the classic carol "O Holy Night" in a Celtic style. Following a beautiful introductory statement, the Irish musical roots come to the fore through percussion and flutes as they create an Irish jig. The clarinets present the melody in the beautiful chalumeau register juxtaposed against the jig. The arrangement builds throughout leading to a very exciting conclusion that is decidedly an Irish celebration. Very highly recommended! Duration: 3.00

Pasovario (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Laseroms, Wim

The compound title of this work reflects its musical content. 'Vario' refers to the two different meters - 3/4 and 2/4 - in which this paso doble has been written. The compact, powerful opening is in 3/4 time: it is followed by a melodic, cantabile second theme, in the beautiful chalumeau register, in 2/4 time. This refreshing piece sets a great tone for your concert!Duration: 3.10

Song of a Summer Night (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jones, Clifton Jameson

Song of a Summer Night evokes the tranquillity of a warm summer night as a breeze from the south stirs the trees. Clarinet Concerto (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus - Sparke, Philip

Mozart originally wrote this concerto for a clarinet with an extended lower range, compared to the conventional instrument. As early as 1802, published versions appeared with registral changes, which made the concerto playable on instruments without the extra keys. When producing an edition for the conventional clarinet there are two choices to be made about the 'extra' notes - is it better to maintain the musical line, and hence transpose whole phrases or passages up an octave, rather than single notes, or is the chalumeau tone more important, in which case it may possibly be better to alter one or two notes to keep the correct octave. In this edition Philip Sparke has usually gone for the former so the 'sequences' make musical sense, but have taken the second option in some places. This fantastic work will prove popular with soloist, band and audience alike.Duration: 28:30

Clarinet Concerto (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Clarinet soloist Linda Merrick is a long-time friend of the composer Philip Sparke and is married to fellow composer, Martin Ellerby. As part of a dynamic and forward-looking PhD thesis on works for clarinet and concert band, Linda has researched the existing repertoire in addition to commissioning several new concerti from leading British composers, including Martin Ellerby and Nigel Clarke. The original concept was for a suite of short movements, each with its own character, but by the time the first movement was complete, it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores initially the chalumeau register of the clarinet in a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bee-bop in style and shows off the jazzier side of the clarinet.Duration: 14.00

Dona Nobis Pacem (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schubert, Marty

In the rich chalumeau register, a solo (or soli) clarinet voice quietly introduces the hauntingly beautiful melody. Layering into the texture, other voices add timbre and depth. The phrasing is exquisite, and teaching opportunities for legato playing abound. A modulation from B-flat to E-flat allows even more sonorities as the work moves to its conclusion. Serious music educators should look closely at this piece. Duration: 2.45
