Episodes and Echoes - Peter Meechan
Episodes and Echoes is a concerto in three movements for tuba. The title of the work relates directly to the way the composer approached writing the piece."Although the work is scored with piano and wind band accompaniments, Episodes and Echoes was originally written for tuba and brass band. I had several problems to overcome - the brass band contains 4 tubas, and 2 euphoniums, all of which could obscure the solo line, so I decided to write for the soloist in a manner that meant they were either playing alone, in episodes, or repeating/echoing phrases."In addition to this, the composer combined the characteristics of the tuba with other instruments: in the second movement the tuba is similar to a singer performing an aria and a recitative, and third movement a bass guitar.Episodes and Echoes was commissioned by, and dedicated to, Les Neish who premiered the work in 2005, accompanied by the Beaumaris Brass Band, conducted by Gwyn Evans.The concerto has received many performances throughout the UK, as well as the rest of Europe.

Something of a classic in its brass band and piano versions! We are delighted, at last, to make this work available ith wind band accompaniment by the composer. Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument. £66.55The Declaration of Arbroath - Andrew Duncan
Programme notes from the composer, Andrew Duncan:Originally written for The West Lothian Schools' Annual Concert 2006 and scored for Concert Band, Brass Band, Highland Bagpipes, Children's Choir and Narrator. This version has been rescored for Concert Band with optional parts for Highland Bagpipes and Narrator. The piece celebrates the internationally renowned Declaration of Arbroath. The music begins in the uncertain times of Scotland's early 14th century, following the Battle of Banockburn and the death of William Wallace. The narrator describes this scene and explains the origins of the Declaration. The music builds to a climax, but once again gives way to uncertainty, allowing the narrator to explain further the history surrounding the Declaration. A group of Scottish Nobles wrote the Declaration which was an appeal to the Pope to recognize Scotland's independence. The piece then reflects a positive outcome following the Pope's support of the Declaration. Further information is provided by the narrator which draws to a rousing build to express the emotive inspiration behind this composition.The original scoring (to include Concert Band, Brass Band, Highland Bagpipes, Choir and Narrator) is also available by request.

Song of Hope is dedicated to my good friend Ryan Anthony (principal trumpet with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra) and his charity, Cancer Blows - a foundation set up to raise awareness and money to further the research that has helped give their family a hope for a future following Ryan's diagnosis of Multiple MyelomaUpon hearing the middle movement (simply titled "Song") of my cornet concerto, Milestone, Ryan asked me if I could change the end from its current reflective ending to something more uplifting, and to title it Song of Hope, giving it much more meaning than I could have ever imagined.As well as a wind band scoring without soloist, Song of Hope exists with 1, 2 or 3 soloists, accompanied by either wind band, brass band, brass ensemble or symphony orchestra.For my friend Ryan.Each set comes with the soloist part for 1 soloist. Program NotesToccata - Oh the blessed Lord was first conceived as a brass sextet and remained in that form until the early 1970s when it was amplified to full brass band instrumentation. Now its further amplification to Wind Band it is hoped that it will be enjoyed by an even greater audience and many more performers.Whilst it is not easy to play, the music, once mastered, is something that bands enjoy. It will be evident to the discerning that this close-knit work is based on the verse of an adaption of the old spiritual, "Oh, dem golden slippers," the text beginning, "Oh the blessed Lord, He has saved my soul." The figures are derived therefrom.The absence of percussion is the express intention of the composer.

Program NotesMajor Joy Webb has a unique and special gift for writing songs that achieve massive popularity, both for the purity of their musical integrity and for the depth of their poetic and literal strength. One of the members of The Salvation Army's 1960s phenomenon "The Joystrings," Joy Webb has a string of popular songs to her name, several of which contributed to the charts successes of enjoyed by the group. In more recent years, many of her tunes have found their why into instrumental repertoire.A prime example of Joy's remarkable gifting is her beautiful Share My Yoke. Although the deeply spiritual words of Share My Yoke may be unfamiliar to some, the sheer beauty of the melody is without doubt. The chorus is reproduced here to offer an insight into the song's meaning:Your slightest movement I will feel and understand.Share my yoke, and come the way that I must go,In our togetherness my peace you'll know.The world beholding us will see it's so.Calling for real sensitivity both from soloist and accompanying group, this is an extremely rewarding piece to play - and a moving listening experience for the audience.The arranger, Ivor Bosanko, who lives in California following retirement from the post of Territorial Music Director in The Salvation Army's USA Western Territory, is himself a respected songwriter, composer and arranger. He has produced this wonderfully sensitive and evocative arrangement of the song for cornet soloist and band. Already widely used and recorded in its original brass band form, this arrangement for concert band will undoubtedly be a useful and valuable addition to repertoire.
