Incantation and Shadow Dance - Barry E. Kopetz

Incantation and Shadow Dance is a musical representation of the appearance of the witches in the Shakespeare play "Macbeth." The piece opens with two exceptionally long and emotionally charged measures, the mood slowly building, much like "chanting over a cauldron," dark, mystical and enchanting, invoking the spirits of the night. Then everything changes very abruptly, as a rhythmic introduction announces the appearance of the spirit dance. It represents a "dance macabre" and as such, brings a sense of impending evil and darkness to the mood until the full complement of spirits are now dancing around the fire. The gathering of "storm clouds" heralds the appearance of all manner of dark and sinister creatures joining the dance which builds to climax as all the spirits gather for the final frenzied finale.

Vampires In The Attic - Joseph Eidson

Vampires in the Attic is a creepy and energetic work for young band that emphasizes musicality and ensemble playing. The slow beginning sets a creepy atmosphere as the dark recesses of the attic are explored. As the pace increases, the trumpet section is featured as if vampires are chased around the attic, ending with the vampires returning to their hiding spots as the opening material is revisited, slowing to a delightfully eerie conclusion.

Take the Ribbons - Gary P. Gilroy

Take The Ribbons was commissioned by the Northern California Band Association for the 2011 All-Northern High School Honor Band. The composition was inspired by the story of Delia Haskett Rawson (1861-1949) who was the first woman stagecoach driver for the famous Wells Fargo stage line. The fast and unrelenting music takes the listener on a wild and driving stage coach run, with the threat from any number of dangers in close pursuit or around the next bend.

    Romp! - Darren W. Jenkins

Romp! was inspired by and dedicated to the composers very cute tabby who decided that his computer table (where he composes) was his spot to be... also when coming up with ideas for this piece, it seemed to fit him very well. The piece represents how he tends to wake up instantly and spring into action... running and darting here and there. The solo breaks and legato section represents how he can shift gears, stopping quickly, then springing right back to his romping around. There is optional "cat meowing" at the end that can be done by one person, if your group has someone who does a good cat meow, or electronically if you have the equipment. Or you can leave it out, though it does add a nice touch.

Selections from Shifter - Darren W. Jenkins

The Xbox Live game Shifter centers around a hero who, to overcome obstacles and challenges, has the power to "shift" back and forth between opposing dimensions: fire and ice. This arrangement by Darren Jenkins includes three selections from the score, Prepare for War!, Main Title and The Heart of Adventure. While each piece represents a different aspect of the storyline, the common thread, the opposing dimensions, is present throughout.

Creepy Crawley Critters - Earl J. Fox Jr.

Creepy Crawley Critters is an entertaining piece that beginning bands will enjoy playing; clarinets dont cross the break, and ranges are within the limits of first-year players. The overall effect is one of a small bug crawling or flying around, annoying the members of the band. The use of ratchet and slapstick adds to the entertainment factor and makes additional fun for percussion students. For even more entertainment value, you may want to consider conducting with a fly swatter or providing several swatters to students to use when they have rests.

Christmas on the Thames - Porter Eidam

Christmas on the Thames is a fantasy of English Christmas carols circling around the beloved melody I Saw Three Ships. It reflects the buzz of activity both on the streets of London and on board a schooner bound for port loaded with cargo and gifts. Decorations are put in the shop windows; the aroma of warm chestnuts and puddings fill the air; carolers sing; the mulled punch known as wassail is drunk. The piece culminates with the ship pulling up to the dock to the sounds of celebratory cheers and ringing church bells. Merry Christmas, guvnor!

Some of the letters are tenderhearted, written in moments of sentimental passion; others are very clear and emphatic statements that he will do whatever it takes to bring the war to a close.
