Celtic Scents is an amazing suite of wonderful musical scents (wildflowers, herbs, and trees) unified by the brilliant imagination of world-renowned teacher, performer and composer Kazimierz Machala, and the familiar sounds of Celtic folk music. This completely original work of seven movements is reminiscent of Grainger'sLincolnshire Posy, including a very creative and enjoyable harmonic palette. The composition requires a full wind band and takes advantage of colorful orchestration to link each movement more closely to the scent it represents. While Machala composed Celtic Scents originally for orchestra, he has carefully and artistically re-orchestrated the work for the modern wind band. Celtic Scents will best suit performances by collegiate and professional wind bands around the world due to the advanced technical and musical requirements. £33.53Menuet (Brass Band) Ravel arr. Rob Bushnell
Le Tombeau de Couperin (The Grave of Couperin) was written by Maurice Ravel between 1914 and 1917, originally a suite of piece for solo piano. Based on what was considered a traditional Baroque suite, Ravel wanted to pay homage to Baroque French keyboard music, whilst retaining his 20th-century chromaticism, making the work neoclassicist. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer who died fighting in World War I. Ravel produced an orchestral version in 1919, omitting two of the original six movements. The Menuet was written in memory of Jean Dreyfus; Ravel had recuperated at his home. This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The Great Gate of Kiev Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was self-educated to a large extent but went on to become one of the ?Mighty Five? which also included Balakirev, Cui, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Today he is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. He composed Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874, inspired by ten pictures produced by his then recently deceased friend, the Russian architect and artist Victor Hartmann. The French composer Maurice Ravel made an orchestration of Mussorgsky?s composition in 1922 which is now more well-known and more performed than the original piano suite. For his transcription of Pictures at an Exhibition, Tohru Takahashi made use of the original piano composition by Mussorgsky. The Great Gate of Kiev, issued here separately, is probably the best known melody from this classical masterpiece. 0:05:45

Danceries (Set II) - Kenneth Hesketh
Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world premire of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood.The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age!

The title Light Music alludes to different things. Most of the music in the suite is light in nature, and is in the inherently British tradition of 'light music' - original pieces which are often descriptive but essentially melodic. In another sense the music depicts various aspects of light itself. The title itself is a trick of the light!The first movement, Lightscape, portrays shifting patterns and types of light, highlighting some details and obscuring others. It is sometimes vibrant, dancing and full of movement, and sometimes tranquil.The second movement, At the going down of the sun, considers the light of the sun as it sets. Because of the nature of his career, the composer has written a fair amount of ceremonial music and this movement is close to that genre once again. There is, in the title, a reference to the familiar Remembrance line 'At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them' from the poem For the Fallen by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) written in September 1914, a few weeks after the outbreak of the First World War. While the music is not a setting of these words - or in any way referential - there is an echo of the words 'We will remember them'.The suite finishes with Set Alight which starts off with a few combustible bars as the flame catches and then the fire is under way.Duration: 11.30
