Franois Glorieux was born in Belgium in 1932, and acclaimed throughout Europe, the USA, Latin America, Canada, Japan, China, the Middle East and Africa. He is one of the most widely accomplished and versatile musicians traveling the international circuit today: pianist composer conductor, commentator, entertainer, honorary professor of chamber music at the Royal Music Conservatory of Ghent and guest professor at Yale University (USA). His particular art was the rare one of improvisation presented in five languages. Glorieux practices all musical styles and has been highly considered by great artists such as Andr Cluytens, Arthur Rubinstein, Yves Nat, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Enrique Jorda, Raphael Frhbeck de Burgos, but also Michael Jackson, Stan Kenton, Stphane Grappelli, Paul McCartney, Toots Thielemans, Jacky Collins, Annie Girardot, Dionne Warwick, A.C. Jobim, and so on.

When the Second World War began, the British March King Kenneth J. Alford (pseudonym for Major F. J. Ricketts, R.M.) was increasingly in bad health and had composed relatively little music recently. As Hitler's armies marched victoriously across Europe, Britain was soon alone facing the Nazi peril. Alford's great contribution to the war effort was the composition of two of his great masterpieces, ARMY OF THE NILE, celebrating the first Allied victories over the Germans in North Africa and EAGLE SQUADRON. The latter of these marches celebrates American airmen who travelled to England during the early years of the war (before the entry of the United States into the conflict) to volunteer for service with the Royal Air Force, serving with great distinction during the Battle of Britain. Alford skillfully weaves a number of well-known tunes into the fabric of the music, including the Royal Air Force March and The Star-Spangled Banner, while also including a reference to the Siegfried motive from Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Mark Rogers' edition of this classic march includes a handsome full score and concert size set of parts.

This is one of the most popular British marches; it was written by Thomas Bidgood (1870-1925) a gifted music teacher who conducted his own professional orchestra, several theatre orchestras and wind bands. He composed a lot of light orchestral music and some fifteen marches, among which 'Vimy Ridge' and 'Sons of the Brave' (1899). The latter was dedicated to the 'Duke of York's Military School' and was first performed in public during the Boers War in South Africa at the turn of the century.

African Dances - Kit Turnbull
African Dances is a continuous work for solo clarinet and wind ensemble consisting of five individual sections. The basis for the piece is the clarinet's construction from the wood of the African blackwood tree, and its subsequent development into the instrument we know today. Each movement draws on different aspects of Pan-African music, ranging from the styles and forms of the African choral tradition, through to the complex cross-rhythms and patterns that characterise so much of the music of Africa.

The time line is a western musicological device that allows us to define many of the rhythms used in sub-Saharan music. It is essentially a 12-beat pattern that can be subdivided as 6x2, 2x6, 4x3, or 3x4, which generates many of the polyrhythms that are common in African music. Time Lines is a single continuous work made up of four contrasting sections which are based on various aspects of African dance and choral music. The slow introduction introduces many of the rhythms that the piece is based on and is followed by a fast section which quotes a South African hymn. Abasundu Nabamhlope (the first line of which translates as 'Black and whites, let them give thanks together'. The chorale section which follows makes use of phrases from the hymn Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (Lord Bless Africa) which was written in 1897 and has since been adopted as the national anthem of several countries in southern Africa.
