Shutter Speed - Carmen Gassi
provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. represents the concepts of movement, quickness, light, and shadow. A clever (and slightly shifting) syncopated rhythmic pulse propels the piece, which is juxtaposed with the melodic material, which is played by a variety of players from Part 1 right down to Part 5. Colorful percussion (which is optional) and great use of dynamic contrast make this an excellent choice for concert or contest use.

The stonework could be quite ornate while the function was to protect the guard from invaders. The accented minor melody describes the stonework and the importance of the guard standing "at the ready" in the castle bartizan. The lyrical, contrasting sections depict the beauty and timelessness of ancient castles. They make their discovery and find that music/dancing was a large part of tribal life both as a ritual and as a means to celebrate.
