The result of such a development, apart from environmental catastrophes that are difficult to predict, would be a gigantic migration of populations. Derek Bourgeois wrote this Serenad for his own wedding, to be played by the organist as the guests left the church ceremony. Not wishing his wife and guests to process out in an orderly 2/4, he surprised everyone by starting the piece in 11/8 and in case anyone began to feel too comfortable, he chaged to 13/8 in the middle! The work has now been released in a number of different orchestration and this one for 6 Part Flexible Ensemble will hopefully enable a greater number of ensembles and audiences to enjoy this delightful and popular miniature. £80.00Clarinet Concerto (The Fallen) (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wilson, Jeffery
The three movements are 'Conflict', 'The Fallen' and 'Resolution', themes that are freely interpreted musically. In 'Conflict', the solo clarinet begins with an ascending figure based on octave leaps, while the accompaniment contrasts with marcato quavers and harsh dissonances. The melody features seventh intervals, and while the movement is marked 3/4 the accompaniment is often 6/8. This is more evident in the second theme where the clarinet line moves much more by step. The development takes these ideas and the cadenza comes from yet more conflict between the now calm clarinet and dissonant clashes in the accompaniment. 'The Fallen' is the slow movement and poignantly features notes from 'The Last Post' in the opening and a beautiful working of 'David of the White Rock' later on. The final movement 'Resolution' is a Rondo in 6/8, brighter but with hints of the initial conflict through the sevenths in the meno mosso sections which interrupt the flow. Another long cadenza takes short ideas from the piece before the work comes to a triumphant end with all four E notes across the whole range, echoing the beginning. Wilson set out to write a concerto for a versatile instrument and has found ways to exploit its capabilities while keeping tonal centre. There are frequent altissimo notes within all three movements. Wilson does use the very low notes, most notably in the cadenzas, but much of the work is high, presumably to allow the clarinet to carry over the wind band accompaniment. A good command of all notes right up to A sharp an octave above the stave is needed, plus technique to travel to and from altissimo notes (legato). The piece is around 25 minutes long. Printing is clear and the piano accompaniment comes as a spiral bound volume.

Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst was Director of Music at St Paul's Girls School in Brook Green, London. St Paul's Suite, written for the school's string orchestra, was premiered there in 1913 and consists of four movements: an energetic Jig in 6/8 and 9/8, Ostinato, based on a simple 4-note theme, Intermezzo, an energetic and rhythmic dance and Finale, adapted from the Second Suite in F in which Holst brilliantly combines The Dargason and The English Dancing Master, with the traditional melody, Greensleeves. After the stark and dramatic opening unison statements, this imaginative works features a lighthearted and spirited 12/8 section with plenty of rhythmic vitality. This is beautifully paired with a lyric middle section that showcases a solo for horn and flowing melodic lines that build to an emotional climax. The turbulence and intensity of a major wind storm is effectively recreated in Richard Saucedo's Of Gale Force Winds. Based around rhythmic figures that create a wind-like effect, and combined with a playful melody, the piece alternates between 6/8 and 9/8 staying rhythmically dynamic throughout. A very brief moment of repose hints at the period of calm that comes in the middle or "eye" of bigger storms. The fury of the storm then returns with darker sonorities and increased energy as this descriptive work comes to an exciting conclusion.Duration: 4:00

A tuneful and reasonably easy suite, comprising Fanfare, Lullaby and All at Sixes and Sevens. There are some asymmetric rhythmic challenges in the last movement as implied in its title, but otherwise this suite is not particularly difficult and sets out to be attractive throughout. The Fanfare is vibrant and energetic while Lullaby is very lyrical and occasionally punctuated by harmonic piquancy. All at Sixes and Sevens plays games between 3/4 and 6/8 with some sevens thrown in for good measure.Duration: 8.45
