£174.99Excelsior - Rob Goorhuis
Excelsior was composed by Rob Goorhuis in the year 2000 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary in 2001 of the Amsterdam-based concert-band Jong Excelsior. Excelsior is a one-movement fantasia, consisting of contrasting themes. The first theme (the Excelsior theme) is characterized by angular figures moving in an upward direction. The second theme is playful and humorous in nature. Rob Goorhuis, who was born and bred in Amsterdan, may even have utilized memories of his own juvenile pranks in this second theme. The third theme, which is introduced by the cor anglais is melancholy and melodious. The elements mentioned above interchange in a thoroughlycaptivating manner, which ultimately results in an attractive composition fully capable of adding lustre to an anniversary. Excelsior werd door Rob Goorhuis gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het 75-jarig jubileum van muziekvereniging Jong Excelsior te Amsterdam. Excelsior is een doorgecomponeerde fantasie, bestaande uit met elkaar contrasterende themas. Het eerste (Excelsior)thema wordt gekenmerkt door hoekige stijgende figuren. Het tweede thema is speels en humoristisch van karakter. Rob Goorhuis, geboren en getogen Amsterdammer, verwerkte hierin wellicht herinneringen aan de kwajongensstreken uit zijn jeugd in Amsterdam. Het derde thema, ge?ntroduceerd door de Engelse hoorn, is melancholiek en zangerig. Genoemde elementen wisselen elkaar op boeiende wijze af, zodat een attractieve compositie is ontstaan. The piece, commissioned in 2001 by the Banda Civica di Soncino, is one of several works that have been specifically written for this prestigious wind orchestra by a number of well-known North European composers. "Story Book" is inspired by a group of tales that are a mixture of history and legend- the former based on historical facts, the latter on traditional beliefs- all connected with life in Soncino (a farming and industrial community in the Cremona plain). The tales are all involves events in the castle (which is still in very good condition) and life at court during the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance period. As the piece develops, it recounts the legend of strange presences in the castle tower (Phantom of the red tower), the bloody battle against invaders (The battle), the foggy landscape and strange female figures seen floating over marshland where there was once a lake (Enchanted lake), and finally the ceremony in the castle's Piazza d'Armi to celebrate victory over the invaders.

The Ceresio, also called Lugano Lake, is located in the sub-alpine area between Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. Two-thirds of its surface is on Swiss territory, while the remaining one-third belongs to Italy. The lake has a peculiar shape, sinuous and characteristic for its unevenness. Along its shores, there are numerous tourist sites such as the city of Lugano, which stands out for its beauty. Commissioned in 2001 by the Lugano Police to celebrate their 100th anniversary, Ceresio is a piece with a Latin flavour, which is especially noticeable in the trio section.

Maxime Aulio composed Les Voyages de Gulliver (Gulliver's Travels) for the concert band of the Conservatoire National de Rgion in Toulouse (France) conducted by Jean-Guy Olive. The first performance took place in Toulouse (Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines) on April 25, 2001. The Anglo-Irish author Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) took about six years to complete his epic tale of adventure. The creative storyline, clear writing and subtlety of Gulliver's Travels have been engaging readers for generations. This literary travel between reason and foolishness was Maxime Aulio's inspiration for this piece. Each of the four movements of this suite is a review of Gulliver'sadventures, resembling the effect of a kaleidoscope, which juxtaposes small fragments of colour in a linear pattern.

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.
