Duke Ellington (1889- 1974) was a very successful American pianist, conductor, composer and arranger. His orchestra existed for decades and was able to survive thanks to the enormous hits that he and his collaborators wrote. Many of those songs now belong to the standard repertoire of jazz musicians.Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) was arranger and composer with the orchestra from 1939, and also wrote Take the A-Train, which became the band's favourite song from 1941. Many recordings were made of it. Juan Tizol (1900-1984, valve trombone) played with Duke Ellington almost his entire career and composed Latin songs for the orchestra. He is co-composer of Caravan and Perdido.Just likein the original Duke Ellington concerts, the medley begins with Take the A-Train, followed by a number of classics from the repertoire of the legendary orchestra. In some songs there are soloists, notable a solo on kettledrums in C- Jam Blues. This solo can also be improvised.When rehearsing a lot of attention has to be paid to the drum and bass, which together form the rhythm section and drive the orchestra on. The other sections have to be tight and create a coherent swing effect. The swing shouldn't be too stiff, and can vary per song. For example in "In a Sentimental Mood", the melody can be played almost straight (classically), while the rhythm section continues swinging.

The first version, written in 1974, was created during the 4th World Saxophone Congress at Bordeaux by Jacques Desloges and the 'Musique de la Police Nationale', conducted by Michel Mriot. The new version was created by the same musicians in Paris in october 1981. This work was composed for a small wind ensemble.

This monumental work of the Dutch composer Hans Cox had it's premiere in 2004. The original title of Virtual Visions was 'Laarbeek Suite'. Laarbeek, a community in Holland of the former places; Lieshout, Beek and Donk and Aarle-Rixtel. The composer was inspired by the surroundings and people that lives in Laarbeek. Characteristic windmills, wide views, poplars, but also the religious habitans and culture of this inspiring area are beautifully translated into music.Hans Kox received several prices. Preludium and fugue have been rewarded in 1954 at the international organ competition in Haarlem. In 1956 he received the cultural price of Arnhem and the Music award of Amsterdam. In 1959, the 'Visser-Neerlandiaprijs' for its first symphony. In 1970, the Prix Italia for 'in Those Days' and in 1974, the first price of the Rostrum of Composers for 'L' Allegria'.

£223.90Bacchus on Blue Ridge - Joseph Horovitz
The Blue Ridge Mountains of North America have inspired many composers, the melodic and rhythmic patterns associated with that region provide a wholesome rustic diet, which may balance our urban sophistication. The three movements of this work are composed on simple symphonic structures, but they include a programmatic element linked by the idea of Bacchus, the god of Wine, Women and Song. To me personally (and probably without conscious foundation), Bacchus has always been a rather jazzy city dweller, which occasionally leaves the rat race of Olympus for a weekend in the country. The course of this work may be taken as a light-hearted illustration of such thoughts. Jazz elements mingle with country-dance, Blues merge with prairie-style, and Valse de Paris is subdued by hoedown. The composition went through many forms from 1974 onwards, and was realised in its final stage for symphonic Wind Band at the end of 1983.

Pick up the Pieces is an instrumental work from 1974 by the Scottish band, Average White Band. They had several hits in the seventies with their funk, soul and disco songs. This piece appeared in the charts several times. In this orchestra version the four voiced harmonies are derived from the first chord Cm11. The Dutch saxophonist, Candy Dulfer covered this number in 1993, causing it to regain popularity and rightly become a Funk Classic.
