Sinfonietta No. 1 was originally written for brass band, commissioned by the Dutch National Championships 2011 in Groningen. It also served as the test piece for the Swiss National Championships 2011 in Montreux, Switzerland. In 2012, Johan de Meij created this version for wind orchestra.Unlike most of Johan de Meij's compositions, Sinfonietta No. 1 is an abstract, non-programmatic work. It consists of three movements, in which the thematic material of the opening measures - an upward fifth jump - returns in various shapes and forms throughout the piece. The slow middle section features solo passages by cello, English horn and bassoon, all starting with thesame fifth jump. The final movement presents an Elgar-like march theme, interspersed with quotes from the second movement, and ending with the opening theme of movement I.

Einar Englund (1916-1999) was a major Finnish composer of symphonies, concertos and film music. His first symphony (1946) bears the title "War Symphony", not given by the composer. He preferred to think think of it rather as a euphoric shout of joy at living to survive the hells of war. The first movement Tempo di marcia depicts seemingly never-ending marching through Karelia during the Soviet-Finnish war. Influences from Sibelius and Shostakovich are present.American conductor Robert J. Ambrose's arrangement of Englund's Tempo di Marcia is scored for wind band. The duration is 9 minutes. The Suite for Variety Orchestra, No. 1 (1956) is a work by Dmitri Shostakovich in eight movements that draws from the composer's earlier themes. The first of these movements is the delightful March, originally found in Korzinkina's Adventures, Op. 59 (1940). James Curnow has skillfully adapted this work for band, sure to become a welcome addition to the repertoire for winds.

£116.40Little Suite No. 1 - Malcolm Arnold
Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921) put an end to his career as leading trumpeter with several famous London symphony orchestras to become a full-time composer. He became world famous with his soundtrack music for 'The Bridge over the River Kwai', but he composed a lot of orchestral, vocal, ballet and chamber music. He wrote several works for wind band and for brass band, such as three 'Little Suites for Brassband'. The 'Little Suite Number 1' Opus 53 for orchestra (followed by the Second Opus 78) consists of a 'Prelude' (Maestoso), a 'Dance' (Allegretto) and a well-known 'March' (Allegro con brio). The march is still on the concert repertoire of many British military bands.
