Magneticfireflies (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Written for the Williamsville (NY) Commissioning Consortium, here is a unique and substantial addition to the band repertoire. Featuring contemporary techniques and an ingenious use of orchestrational colors, this descriptive work makes full use of the concert band's palette of sound possibilities.

Magnificat anima mea (My soul doth magnify The Lord) is the first of seven movements comprising John Rutter's setting of the biblical canticle Magnifica, completed in 1990. Rutter was inspired by jubilant celebrations of Mary in Hispanic cultures and conceived the work as a bright Latin-flavoured fiesta. In countries such as Spain, Mexico and Puerto Rico, feast days of the Virgin are joyous opportunities to take to the streets and celebrate with singing, dancing and processions. This arrangement for combined Concert Band and Chorus may also be performed by band alone, and is a faithful representation of the original composition.

Magnolia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

Just as the magnificent blooms of the magnolia appear in springtime, so this simple choral melody opens slowly and gracefully, eventually blossoming to a glorious climax. The delightful opening theme is taken up again, and eventually everything comes to rest, like a bud that closes at the day's end. Duration: 5.45

Mah Na, Mah Na (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Umiliani, Piero - Schwalgin, Stefan

The Italian film music composer Piero Umiliani originally composed Mah Na Mah Na in 1968 for the soundtrack of the Swedish movie Sweden - Heaven or Hell. However the piece only became a hit in the 1970s, when Jim Henson used the catchy melody in his children's TV series The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Stefan Schwalgin has produced this excellent version to give baritone saxophonists, who sometimes feel left out by the band's repertoire, a platform for their soloistic development. This gem is full of little musical surprises and will hold a special place in your bands repertoire. 03:45

Made famous by the Muppets, but also recorded by a number of contemporary artists (including rock group Cake) this clever tune is sure to raise a smile. Arranged here in a straight 8th Latin style (rather than swing) the melody is cleverly passed from section to section. Sure to be a fun piece for your students.
