GOOD TIDINGS OF GREAT JOY (A Christmas Narrative for Band) - Lawshe, Wilford - Holcombe, Bill

Good Tidings of Great Joy is based on the biblical texts according to Isaiah and St. Luke. The christmas Story has been told many times in oratorio and cantata form, but this version is told instrumentally. The success and uniqueness of this composition results from the composers careful intertwining of over 40 Christmas Carols and themes including excerpts from Handel's Messiah and Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Each stran dis like a threat intricately woven, the more familiary the strands are to the listener, the finder the tapestry becomes. The musical substance of the piece is sufficient to tell the Christmas Story, althought the use of prgramme notes, citing the verses of the scripture used, or the optional narration provided, will help clarify the progress of the story to some of the listeners. In addition ot eh optional narration, an optional unison chorus on "O Come O Ye Faithful" is incorporated at the end of the composition.

Goodnight (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas

The composer dedicated Goodnight to his two youngest daughters, Teresa and Sarah, creating another addition to his series of children's pieces, which includes Powerplay and Romantic Ballad. The intimate atmosphere created by the music reflects the unique and precious connection between a father and his daughters. As the name implies, Goodnight was conceived as a lullaby, making it a perfect encore to end an evening concert.Duration: 4.00

"Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Somewhere around reading number 500, I began hearing little musical fragments as I read, and over time those fragments began to blossom into a simple, sweet lullaby. I knew it was a long shot, but I asked my manager, Claire Long, to contact HarperCollins and see if they would allow the text to be set to music. To my surprise and delight they agreed - the first time they had ever allowed Goodnight Moon to be used in such a way. I composed the piece relatively quickly, originally setting the text for harp, string orchestra, and my son's mother, soprano Hila Plitmann. I later arranged Goodnight Moon for SATB choir and piano. More recently, my dear friend Verena M?senbichler-Bryant arranged the piece for wind ensemble and soloist. The melody of Goodnight Moon will forever make me think of those quiet nights, reading my son to sleep." -Eric Whitacre

Gospel John

Jeff Steinberg's "Gospel John" was a great hit for Maynard Ferguson in the 1970's and still sounds totally hip.
