Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the 'blues' melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!Duration: 3:00

Eye of the Hawk was inspired by the beautiful and majestic Hudson Valley. I wanted to base the piece on something that would resonate with the band who would be premiering it... my local, exceptional, middle school band. The hawk became our spirit animal, and represented to me many of the qualities that are inherent in a young person of that age: bold, instinctive, elegant, a fierce creature who owns the sky. Eyes on the Stars (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

Eyes on the Stars was commissioned by the Surrey Police Band in 2022 in memory of George Rowland. George was a remarkable character. He was born in Vienna but spent his early days in Tuscany, coming to England with his family at the start of WW2, where he went on to be one of the pioneers of cancer research. He was an avid skier, tennis player and extremely keen musician. Wherever he went he joined a community band so when he and his family settled in Surrey he joined the Surrey Police Band. To them he was George who played bass clarinet, a polite chap with a lovely deep Surrey accent! In trying to fulfil the terms of a commission for a five-minute work I attempted to embrace the verve and aspirational nature of George and his overwhelmingly positive nature, hence the title Eyes on the Stars.- Rob WiffinFirst performed by the Surrey Police Band on 18 March 2023 at Emmanuel Church in Stoughton.Duration: 5.15
