This piece combines the simple, elegant thematic material of the Elizabethan church composer Tallis, expanded and modernised through the luxurious harmonies of Vaughan Williams. A setting for band has been long overdue, and Jay Bocook does a masterful job of transforming the original work for string orchestra into a magnificent setting for winds. Fantasia was used with great effect in the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.Duration: 3.45

Fantasia on an Irish Hymn (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John

Based on the beautiful Irish hymn Be Thou My Vision, this brilliant fantasia presents a variety of musical styles that will challenge and stimulate the developing band. A broad, modal fanfare opens the work followed by a full ensemble statement of the hymn. A rapid 12/8 percussion ostinatato in the style of traditional Irish folk music sets up the second section and continues under the haunting Mixolydian melody. A drone-style accompaniment and interesting counter-melodies add to the excitement before the hymn returns in a glorious maestoso. This unique combination of musical elements makes for another thrilling and inspiring work from John O'Reilly! Duration: 4.00
