Calling for the band to be divided into four separate ensembles (and spread apart if space permits), Villages explores a wide range of harmonic and rhythmic interplay between each of these musical villages. The opening creates a dense canopy of sound, out of which the unique identity of each group variously emerges then melts back into the texture. Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. Virtuoso (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Virtuosi consists of a single movement divided into two continuous sections, each characterised by a particular mood. The opening section creates a serene and mysterious atmosphere with the clarinets introducing a warm, smooth melody which naturally flows towards a passage containing much ornamentation. A calmato brings the first section to a close, giving the soloist the opportunity to reveal the warm tones of the low chalumeau register. The second section begins with a sequence of rhythmic, dynamic sound effects which lead into a virtuoso passage from the soloist. The lively passage then softens to let a short theme introduce the majestic and brilliant finale. 08:00
