Toccata Festiva (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Toccata Festiva was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the Toccata Festiva: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Part of the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).Duration: 13:30

Toccata in Blue was originally written as a duet for 2 pianos, where the incessant movement and improvisatory element seemed particularly well suited. Built around some of the composers favourite blues chords, the piece was an ideal candidate for reworking for wind band. While the overall framework of the piece remains largely similar to the piano duet, the material has been thoroughly re-worked to suit the larger forces and particularly the invaluable addition of percussion.

Toccata Rhapsodic (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.

Composed using a single moderate tempo, Toccata Rhapsodic is a study in articulation and phrasing for second year players. The piece cleverly combines elements of staccato at the same time other players are playing legato phrases, and encourages students to listen for the difference. Tochter Zion, also known as See the Conquering Hero Comes, is the most famous chorus from the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus (1746) by the composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). The heroic epic based on the Biblical story about commander-in-chief Judas Maccabaeus, was used by Handel to celebrate the English victory over the rebellious Scottish. The first performance of this patriotic work - written in the pleasing, rich baroque style that Handel's music is known for - was conducted by himself; the success was huge. Tokyo 2000 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John

Tokyo 2000 begins with a haunting pentatonic flute passage, which is immediately answered by tom-toms and timpani that evoke the sounds of the classic drums of Kyoto. Stark brass pyramids and fluid woodwind passages set the stage for the exciting "Allegro," combining pentatonic melodies with contemporary polychords and interesting syncopated rhythms. A chorale-style middle section showcases the brass, only to lead back to the main theme and a rousing coda to bring the work to a magnificent finish.
