Toward the Unknown Region (Choir with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Vaughan - Noble, Paul

This magnificent setting of Walt Whitman's poem established Vaughan Williams's reputation as one of the leading composers of the twentieth century. The idea of a spiritual journey - the passage of the soul from darkness to light, Toward the Unknown Region - is central to the text and fully reflected in the music. Beginning softly and simply, the music follows the text of the poem, building through a Wagnerian chromaticism toward a bold and dramatic climax. This was Vaughan Williams's first major choral piece, and its obvious inspirational qualities made it a success from the first. This arrangement for Concert Band and Chorus adheres to the original orchestration. The choral parts are included in the conductor's score as a reference, but are not part of the set. The choral parts are available for purchase seperately.

Towards the Future was commissioned by the Nagoya City Fire Bureau for the 50th anniversary of the Nagoya City Fire Bureau Band (Nagoya, Japan). It was premiered by the band on 7 February 2009, conducted by Masuo Nakamura. This concert march was conceived to lift up the spirits of the firemen who save people's lives. The solemn and heart-warming melodies express their braveness when faced with danger and the tenderness shown towards the people they protect. The inspiration for this piece came from the address of the person who commissioned the work: Morse Street, Houston, Texas. It pays tribute to the immense skill of the engineers who succeeded in submerging a wire across the Atlantic to send messages in morse code from America to Europe. This technical ingenuity provided the perfect source of material for a transatlantic musical message. This work explores the vast expanse of the Atlantic and makes use of Irish melodies to celebrate the point where the cable enters into the Atlantic Ocean.Duration: 7.00
