Creating a community through music making: that, in short, is the essence of The Sound of Unity. Kevin Houben was commissioned to write this work by the Belgian municipality of Riemst. The music highlights the charm of the town, its sights, its splendid scenery, and much more... But above all the strong community spirit of the inhabitants of Riemst is beautifully expressed. The Sounds of Christmas Joy

Opening with a fanfare based on "Joy To The World" featuring prominent bells and chimes, Swearingen then seques into an expressive, "classical" setting of Beethoven's famous "Ode to Joy". After a tasty modulation into a new setting of "Ode to Joy" with modern harmonies and tone colors, the final section presents a traditional rendition of "Joy to the World". Concludes with a "classically" based presto! Exceptional!

The Source (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

At the heart of this piece are several elements that inspired the composer. First of all: nature, infinite and inexhaustible, giving life and power, something bigger than humans can grasp. The composer used the Gregorian hymn 'Veni Creator Spiritus' as a leitmotiv to reflect this idea. A second element was the passing of David Maslanka, a dear friend of the composer, honoured in the work by a few musical 'echoes'. At the end of the work, there is a passage for optional choir in different possible settings. The Source was commissioned by the Banda Giovanlie Regionale ANBIMA FVG, Italy, and is an impressive, stirring and moving piece of music. Duration: 8.00

The Spell (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waespi, Oliver

The Spell is a musical interpretation of an old legend from the Alpstein, a mystical mountain area in the east of Switzerland. According to the tale, a shepherd boy, Hennes, cared for his animals on the alpine pastures, but many of the animals fell ill with a terrible plague and died. The mountain spirit appeared to Hennes out of the mists of Santis and so the story unfolds... The music of The Spell follows the narrative of this legend, in which musical motifs are assigned to the essential elements of the story, a technique seen in late romantic repertoire by composers such as Wagner or Richard Strauss.Duration: 13.00

The Spheres (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gjeilo, Ola

This evocative work is a wind band version of the composer's mass for choir and string orchestra entitled Sunrise. The piece is built around a five-note chorale theme, and the opening section features an overlapping fade-in/fade-out effect meant to give a sense of floating in space, as if surrounded by stars and planets. The Spiked Wheel (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haes, Tom

The legends surrounding Saint Catherine of Alexandria, also known as the Great Martyr Saint Catherine, were the source of inspiration for this work. It depicts events surrounding her life in five musical episodes. The first episode presents the Emperor's procession and theme. All is well until a heathen sacrificial ritual is heard in the second movement. After the sacrifice, Catherine and her lyrical, reflective theme make an appearance. A dispute breaks out between Catherine and the Emperor, which can be heard in the heated exchange between their respective themes. Catherine is sentenced to die by the breaking wheel. The voices of angels can be heard in the finale, as Catherine ascends to heaven.Duration: 16.00
