This quirky, spirited piece is in the style of a blues waltz and based on the mythical legend of the squonk, a forest creature that dissolves into a pool of tears when it is cornered. However, on dark moonless nights when no one is about, they gather together to sing and dance the Squonk Blues! A unique change of pace, this composition uses the first six notes of the B-flat scale.

Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst was Director of Music at St Paul's Girls School in Brook Green, London. St Paul's Suite, written for the school's string orchestra, was premiered there in 1913 and consists of four movements: an energetic Jig in 6/8 and 9/8, Ostinato, based on a simple 4-note theme, Intermezzo, an energetic and rhythmic dance and Finale, adapted from the Second Suite in F in which Holst brilliantly combines The Dargason and The English Dancing Master, with the traditional melody, Greensleeves. St Stephen's Chorale (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

As a source of inspiration, the composer used the dazzling, impressive and beautiful world-famous St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Stephansdom, in Vienna. Often seen as a national symbol of Austria, it stands in the heart of Vienna and has 14 bells, each with its own name. At the beginning of the work, you can hear the ringing of the bells. The main melody softly emerges from this soundscape and returns repeatedly in various instrumentations and different harmonisations. Following a fortissimo section, the hymnal melody ebbs and fades away, the same way it appeared at the beginning. St. Stephen's Chorale is a solemn moment of contemplation in your concert.Duration: 7.00

St. Anthony Chorale (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Haydn, Joseph - Williams, Mark

This beautiful, unique chorale serves as the basis to Johannes Brahms's famous orchestral masterpiece Variations on a Theme of Haydn. (Long attributed to Franz Joseph Haydn, recent scholarship indicates that it was probably written by some other composer of the Classical period.) This prelude has allusions to the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons (The Bells of St. Clement's). Following the Second World War St. Clement's has been adopted as the Royal Air Force church, to which this work is dedicated.
