SPECIAL PLACE, A (Programme Concert Band) - Richards, Goff

A Special Place was composed and dedicated to 'The Children's Hospice South West' - a charity founded to aid children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, and to give support to their families. The original version for brass band has helped to raise funds for this good cause, and the Bristol Concert Wind Band Associations, with the same aims, commissioned this wind band edition. The melody and arrangement is Goff Richards at his best and is a real audience winner.

Spectrum (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Story, Michael

A grandiose opening fanfare is followed by a delicate melody in the flute section. The melodic material is further developed in the brass and percussion sections. The second theme is a warm flowing melody material, which builds to a dynamic conclusion. Although this is an original composition your audience will imagine that the themes are familiar. This is a superb concert selection. Very programmatic and highly recommended. Duration: 2.30

Extra Score. SPECTRUM. This work caused much consternation when it was used as the brass band test piece at the 1969 British Open Competition. The score is an uncompromising one and as colourful as its title suggests. The various episodes of the work are each named after a colour from the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Purple (changed from Violet when Vinter became conscious of his failing health). It is a piece of violent mood swings challenging all sections of the band. Many consider this to be the finest of Vinter's small output for band.
