Commissioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and first performed by them on 6th August 1992.1. Overture: VivaceA bustling opening movement in sonata form. After an introduction in which a syncopated theme is tossed around the band, the first subject proper gives way to a more legato second theme. A scherzando bridge passage leads to the recapitulation.2. Serenade: Lento ExpressivoA short introduction leads to a sonorous theme from the middle of the band. A slightly more rhythmic central 5/8 section leads to a short cadenza-like duet for two alto saxes which reintroduces the opening of the movement.3. Finale: Molto VivaceA fast and furious finale which fails to settle long enough for a real theme to develop as motivic ideas are thrown from player to player. Eventually a violently syncopated tune emerges from the middle of the band but this is interrupted by a reflective interlude. Sinfonietta No.2 - A Sign of the Times (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

It was an interesting challenge to return to the form of a sinfonietta some twenty years after the last one. This work is not hugely problematic to play but was written without regard for technical demands, following a series of compositions that needed to take difficulty level into consideration. The work has five percussion parts but the tuned percussion, although desirable, can be omitted. As for the band parts, Oboe 2 is largely covered elsewhere but the colour of the cor anglais would be a definite enhancement to the overall sound. The work was written in 2025 when it seemed as if the world was a particularly volatile place.The first movement 'Foment' seeks to capture that menacing mood of unrest and the potential for violence that seemed to erupt without warning and without efforts to contain it from warmongers posing as peacemakers. The music is severe and focussed with just a short scherzo-like episode of levity to balance the quasi-military mood.'A Dream of Peace' takes a few moments to contemplate a different, more peaceful world and several ideas are considered before settling on the slow waltz-like melody. This uses a very tonal language but is given a particular hue by its use of sevenths and ninths and there are moments of stress which disrupt the tranquillity.In 'Call to Arms' the warlike mood returns with a sense of restless energy that drives the music to its conclusion.- Rob WiffinDuration: 14.00

Sinfonietta No.3 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.Duration: 18:20

Sinfonietta No.4 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Philip Sparke's Sinfonietta No. 4 is comprised of three parts that are played as an uninterrupted whole. The first movement begins with a lyrical fugato passage, framing a brisker and more rhythmical middle section. The second movement is slower and contains a long and expressive euphonium solo. The third movement is a salute to the sponsor of this commission: various percussion instruments conjure up sounds reminiscent of a carpenter's workshop, accompanied by a unison orchestral passage in a scat style.Duration: 18:45

Sinfonietta No.5 consists of three movements: Fanfare, Interlude and Toccata. It is a work full of variety, featuring turmoil and passion as well as peaceful passages. The different moods make this an appealing composition which is wonderful to play for all sections, as well as a joy for the audience to listen to. Highly recommended for your next concert. Sinfonisches Praludium (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bruckner, Anton - Doss, Thomas

The Symphonic Prelude in C minor is an orchestral composition from the circle of the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner. The unearthing of this work, discovered shortly after World War II, has created confusion, leading to a second, reduced version being attributed to Gustav Mahler, a theory which still holds sway in musical circles today, although there is a high probability that the original composition is indeed by Bruckner himself. Rudolf Krzyzanowski (1895-1911), a pupil of Bruckner, transcribed the score in 1876. The 43-page manuscript bears the inscription Rudolf Krzyzanowski cop. 1876 on the first page; while on the last page is written in blue pencil: By Anton Bruckner. Thomas Doss used a facsimile of this autograph copy as the basic of his instrumentation of the prelude for symphonic wind orchestra.Duration: 6.15

Sing Lullaby (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

Sing Lullaby, also known as The Infant King, is an arrangement of a Basque Carol. The words were translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) an Anglican priest and folk song collector. The melody was harmonized by the English organist and music editor Edgar Pettman (1866-1943) who included it with other Basque carols (also rendered by Sabine Baring-Gould) in The University Carol Book in 1922. I use a little of Pettman's harmony but also take a different look. I also set it in 3/4 time rather than Pettman's 6/8 (starting with an anacrusis) which allowed me more freedom of expression and a chance to use a few hemiolas in poignant moments. It is a beautiful, tender carol as befits a lullaby though not without a few suspensions which allude to the future trials of the Infant King described in Baring-Gould's words.- Rob WiffinDuration: 4.15
