Psyche et Eros (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Franck, Cesar - Cesarini, Franco

Cesar Franck, composer, pianist, organist and music teacher, completed Cupid and Psyche, his sixth and last symphonic poem in 1887. It was first performed in Paris in 1888 and was a complete success, but the piece later fell completely into oblivion, and it was only thanks to some meticulous research that it has returned to concert halls. The intricate love affair between Psyche and Cupid is an original story of the Metamorphoses, written in the 2nd century AD by Apuleius. The tale is about overcoming obstacles in love and their final union. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts and calls for a choir. The movement that is the subject of this arrangement, Psyche et Eros, is positioned at the end of the second part. Franco Cesarini's version for wind orchestra carefully illustrates the nuances of the instrumental colours, and represents a real test aimed at demonstrating the musicality and interpretative skills of orchestras and their conductors. Pueblo (Land of Ancient Peoples) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Higgins, John

This impressive work by John Higgins is a descriptive essay for band, reflecting the mysteries of Native American peoples and their kinship with nature. The varied musical sections are subtitled: "Enchanted Mesa"; "Adobe Village"; "Ancient Voices"; and "Mother Earth, Father Sky." The optional solo for recorder can be played by a solo flute or flute section. Duration: 4:20

Pulcinella (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Lin gave the premiere of Pulcinella in both its concert band and brass band versions in January 2021. Pulcinella continues Sparke's series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dell'arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the full band and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The band then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The band then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close. Duration: 6.45

Pulsation (A "Groove" for "Grove") (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.

Written entirely in one tempo, but with the meter alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 throughout, Richard Saucedo creates an ingenious effect of pulsating motion along with layers of textures and sounds. Starting with a soloistic dialogue between flute and clarinet the work progresses to thicker sonorities and percussive effects including clapping and shouting. Definitely an enjoyable work that is off the beaten path!Duration: 2:45
