This band work is based on the composer's opera, The Palace, deriving the composition in rhapsodic form from some of the main themes of the opera. While the score includes many of Sallinen's most infectious melodies, the undertones are ominous as the occupants of the Palace transfer power from one dictator to an equally totalitarian authority. Paladin (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Houben, Kevin

Paladin (heroic knight) was written for the music society De Heibloem from Meeuwen, Belgium and tells the story of the disastrous Saint Nicholas Day of 1648. In the first half of the seventeenth century, the mercenary armies of Karel van Lorreinen terrorised several villages in the province of Limburg. Between 1,500 and 1,600 farmers gathered in Peer on December 6, 1648, to battle against the cruel mercenaries who looted and burned down their villages. The brave farmers did not stand a chance and were ambushed in Meeuwen and within quarter of an hour there were four hundred fatalities and at least as many wounded. In history books, this encounter is referred to as the shortest battle ever. A truly heroic work suitable for all concert programmes.Duration: 7:15

Palestrina Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Palestrina, Giovanni - Moss, John

Hymns by Giovanni de Palestrina pre-date those of Bach by over a century and incorporate the great polyphonic tradition of Renaissance writing. The compositions used in this suite are from a collection published in 1589 titled Hymns of the Entire Year, and incorporate antiphonal choral effects that lend themselves particularly well to instrumental settings. John Moss uses richly contrasting tone colours and textures as well as characteristic modal tonalities in this wonderful setting for band.Duration: 3.30

Palimpsest

An ambitious composition based on an ancient psalm-chant that the composer heard sung by a group of monks in Europe. Elements from the chant are used in a variety of ways creating a wide range of textures and moods until the chant reappears at the end of the piece scored for the full ensemble. PALLADIO (Young Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jenkins, Karl - Longfield, Robert

Although this composition sounds like it came straight out of the Baroque period, it is actually the first movement of a suite written in 1996 by Karl Jenkins. Instantly recognized as the "diamond commercial" theme, its relentless pulse and dramatic nature make it a natural for bands. Robert Longfield's skilled arrangement puts it within reach of most groups. (2:45)
