Shelter Island (Wind Band/Score) - Nigel Hess

is the first movement of East Coast Pictures. It is a depiction of the Shelter Island itself, a few hours' drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This 'picture' is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island.

Sir Roger de Coverley (Wind Band/Score & Parts) - Frank Bridge

Frank Bridge (1879 ??" 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens'

The Fair Field Overture (Wind Band/Score & Parts) - Malcolm Arnold

The Fairfield Halls are built on the site of Croydon's old fair field and the music is rather reminiscent of a huge switchback ride in three-four time interspersed with a sprightly two-four prelude which seems to depict the general jollity of the fair ground. The main tune then expands to three-two time making for a grandiose finale. The general structure of the music is based on the chord of the major seventh which produces an interesting hurdy-gurdy effect.
