Downshifting - Dan Welcher

Commissioned by a consortium of 20 high school and university bands coordinated by Scott Hanna of the University of Texas at Austin, Downshifting is inspired by Welcher's joy of bicycle riding. Welcher explains in the program note: When I decided to write a piece for band that was basically entertaining and uplifting, it made perfect sense to call it Downshifting... With three gears on the front sprocket and seven on the rear, it's possible to keep one's legs going at a constant speed (for me, q = 126) while the bike itself may be moving very slowly or very quickly. I determined to capitalize on this in writing Downshifting, which keeps the same mathematical inner pulse,'shifting' (with a ratchet) as the terrain changes.

The distinctive theme for this popular television series is both haunting and rhythmically intense. In creating this very effective adaptation for band, Robert Longfield skillfully trades the active background figure from sectionto section, and contrasts this with the flowing lyric melody.

Downtown Divertimento - Johan de Meij

The inspiration for Downtown Divertimento comes from Johan de Meijs daily wanderings in Chelsea, in lower Manhattan. The day begins with a leisurely walk to Madison Square Park with his dog Alice. They visit the dog run where she meets up withother city canines. On the way back they have a moment of reflection looking at the nearby Flatiron Building, the striking triangular city landmark. Johan goes for a run later in the day. His jogging shoes naturally head for The Highline, anabandoned railway viaduct that was transformed into a lushly landscaped National Park. He absorbs the spectacular views of the Hudson River and the majestic New York skyline as if seeing them for the first time.The movements are:1) Dog Play (at Madison Square Park)2) Flatiron Reverie3) Hitting the Highline

David Holsinger's Downtown Scherzo represents a departure in style for this composer who is well-known for aggressive and volatile musical styles. Originally composed as part of a larger orchestral work, the composer has extracted and adapted this scherzo which is extraordinarily well-suited to the concert band. Lighthearted, effervescent, and joyful, with just the touch of Holsinger magic, this work for mature bands is an excellent choice for any concert performance.
