Expansion - Claudio Dorigato

This piece features two themes: one is slow and contemplative, the other is quicker and more rhythmic. The themes are repeated and rearranged several times in a combination of different harmonies and sound mixtures. Both arising out of one phrase, the two themes have been developed in a number of ways using modality as a language. Tiny fragments of the theme introduce and link the various moments. These fragments, repeated using different rhythms and combinations, lead to a finale where the melodic and harmonic elements come closer, continuously imitating each other and becoming more and more similar, until everything overlaps in different scales.

Expectation - Geir Sundbø

"Expectation" is composed in a traditional ABA-form. The A-part exploits different rhythmical elements, mixed meters and dissonances while the B-part is calm and melodic with harmonies that challenge the players to "accept" dissonant tones as a colouring element. The composer wishes that this piece makes young musicians curious and interested in the exiting field of new contemporary music.

Expectations is dedicated to Larry Clark's young son. It was written with thoughts of his playful nature, which can be heard throughout the piece, while the lush, emotional opening depicts the composer's awe at being a parent to a wonderful little boy. This touching piece may stretch the musicianship of young band students, but it will be worth the journey.
