Danzn No. 2 - Arturo Márquez

Danzn no. 2 by the Mexican composer Arturo Mrquez was included on the program of the Simn Bolvar Youth Orchestra of Venuzuela conducted by Gustavo Dudamel on their 2007 tour of Europe and the United States. As a result of the strong public response to the orchestra's performance of the piece, Danzn no. 2 has established itself as one of the signature pieces performed by the orchestra. It has also opened the door for the discovery of other pieces by the composer that are increasingly being performed throughout the world and extensively in Latin America. The arrangement for Symphonic Windorchestra is made by Oliver Nickel.

Daphnis and Chloe - Maurice Ravel

Ravel's ballet, Daphnis and Chlo, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered with the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1912. The ballet is now rarely performed, but its Suite No. 2 remains popular. It consists of three movements, Lever du jour, Pantomime and Danse gnrale, that are played without interruption. Tohru Takahashi makes no compromises in his transcription, which calls for at least 60 musicians and an optional mixed chorus!

The title of this impressive work is translated from the Cherokee word "oologah." Its inspired by Native American musical influences as well as the imagery of a powerful and dramatic storm that appears suddenly, sweeping viciously across the Midwestern plains. At first brooding on the horizon and later exploding with intensity, Dark Cloud represents the challenges and strife of a people battling the fierce and unpredictable elements in a time before technology.

Composer Robert L. Lee draws on his experience as an active middle-school band director to write this forceful composition offering features for each section in a beginning band. A very bold theme is contrasted with a staccato woodwind feature that is then followed by a low brass and woodwind lead section. This is dramatic music that students will want to play again and again.
