Windy City Holiday - Gary P. Gilroy

Windy City Holiday was composed specifically for the Fresno State Wind Orchestra for their performance at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois for the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival. The composer, Gary P. Gilroy, serves as the Director of Bands at Fresno State and conductor of the universitys premiere wind band, the Fresno State Wind Orchestra and Dr. Gilroy wrote this work in honor of the students who raised the funding needed to be a part of the Festival. The group took a five-day trip to Chicago and as such, had a "Holiday" of sorts in the famous Windy City with Dr. Gilroy on his first major trip as the Director of Bands with the Wind Orchestra. The work is one of the more challenging compositions Gilroy has written in some time and he wanted to compose an exciting and energetic opener for this historic concert. He also wanted the work to represent the fun and excitement his students would be exposed to in Chicago so it was important that the opener be playful and light at times.

Chicago, America's third largest city, is characterised by its modernskyline with dazzling architecture, fabulous restaurants and swingingjazz clubs. It is also, however, famous for its bitterly cold wind whichblows in from Lake Michigan and gives the city its nickname "TheWindy City". With Windy City Overture, Johan de Meij has produced ashort, rich energetic work, which represents the spirit and the powerof this exciting city.

Wingin' It! - Gilbert Tinner

Wingin' It! is an entertaining concert piece. It makesespecially high demands on the rhythmic qualities ofthe band and requires exact articulation and phrasingaccording to the composer's instructions. After abrilliant opening, a catchy theme crystallizes whileall sections take turns to come to the forefront.Based on this theme, a swing in the classic big bandstyle, a peaceful Bossa (in which the woodwindsdominate) and a section with typical rock and funkrhythms follow. The two-step feeling closes thecircle to lead to the grand finale. This compositionfeatures all the essential elements of a contest pieceand provides a particular challenge in the understandingand execution ofpopular styles. It alsooffers all the facets that make a work attractive forthe audience as well as the musicians.
