Turkish Fragments - Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov

Pursuing his interest in the Turkish peoples, the composer created this work for orchestra in 1930. It is a richly melodic suite notable for its characteristically oriental turns of phrase. This work is presented in four movements: Caravan, which depicts a steady journey over rolling sand dunes; At Rest, alternately tranquil and spirited; Night, serene in nature with a slight touch of mystery; and Festival, a dance-like finale with unyielding exuberance. All the movements use material from folk music of the region combined with a wonderful pallet of wind-instrumental colors. An exotic and colorful Turkish fabric in music.

This delightful march from Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11, K.331 is masterfully scored by Robert Longfield in a light, allegretto style. The piece moves between a B minor/major tonality. Robert has layered many of the sections to create a moving and ever-changing timbrel pattern. An easy grade 4.

Turn the Beat Around - Peter Jackson

In the nineties, the Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan recorded a sparkling version of Vicki Sue Robinson's disco classic Turn the Beat Around. She gave the song a catchy Latin beat, and with this new impulse, it was a worldwide hit. With the sentence from the song text "Love to hear percussion" in mind, Peter Kleine Schaars incorporated a compelling percussion solo in his arrangement. The result is a dynamic piece of music full of pace and passion.

Turn the World Around - Harry Belafonte

Harry Belafonte's masterful song about the interconnection between fire, water, mountain and spirit was performed to much acclaim on the The Muppet Show in 1977. The song, which explains that through understanding we can all turnthe world around, became a favorite of Muppet creator Jim Henson and was performed at his memorial service. Featuring an infectious African-flavored groove in 5/4, this is a unique and effective setting for band.
