Triptychon - Johan de Meij

Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865 - 1931) painted his famous Aino Triptych in 1891, with his own wife Mary as the model. It is inspired by the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic and depicts the story on three panels: The left one is about the first encounter of Vinminen and Aino in the forest. The right one depicts mournful Aino weeping on the shore and listening to the call of the mermaids of Vellamo who are playing in the water. The central panel depicts fishing Vinminen having thrown away a small fish, which turns out to be Aino, who laughs at him and vanishes forever.

Ensembles with instrumentation challenges still have numerous options to cover all parts, yet orchestration is elevated significantly to be faithful to the composer's original intent. Musicians have more opportunities to rest, and timbre once again becomes a central element of each work. So go ahead and have the best of both worlds: flexible and colorful.

Triqui-Traqui - Paul Desenne

Commissioned by Gustavo Dudamel for his 2017 New Year's concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, my Caribbean reinterpretation of Strauss' famous Tritsch-Tratsch Polka was deemed tooosefor the occasion, yet the maestro recorded it that year, not in Vienna but in Caracas, with the fabulous performers of his orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfnica Simn Bolvar, and published it on the web as his musical New Year's greetings card. The gesture was meaningful, and bold. I'm convinced that Johann Strauss, a man immersed in the fashions of his city and his time, would have loved the idea; a musical collage which carries in its banter a very strong aesthetic statement. The lightest and most frivolous things seem to always carry the deepest messages, let us not forget. ... ... Today, this version of my transformed Tritsch- Tratsch Polka forSymphonic Band created by Steve Boehm, will certainly tickle the Viennese in each and every one of us, and we will be very happy!"

Triton - Robert E. Foster

Tuneful and stylish, this new modern edition is based on the original 1892 band publication. The first part was published as a short march for piano and violin and the two contrasting sections were added later. The result is a very enjoyable and playable Sousa march with optional endings that can be performed in a variety of ways.
