This new piece from composer Bill Calhoun is a distinctly American work for concert band that has potential as a concert or contest piece or as patriotic tribute to our great land. Starting with an open sounding fanfare, the piece leads to a truly American style melodic figure before developing variations on Yankee Doodle in ways reminiscent of other great American composers. This is followed by a heartfelt middle section, leading to a stunning climax with the opening material returning for an upbeat conclusion. This will make you band sound wonderful for concert or contest.

Based on traditional American melodies including "Yankee Doodle", "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "Shenandoah", Robert W. Smith's "American Flourish" is a light, yet musically substantive addition to the repertoire. American Folk Fantasy

American Folk Fantasy is a medley in overture style, which includes three well-known American folk songs. The first section utilizes 'Round Her Neck She Wears a Yellow Ribbon in an up-beat, march-like rendition. The second tune,All the Pretty Little Horses (Hushabye), provides a lyrical touch to the middle section. What follows is a stirring setting of the famous Shaker melody, Simple Gifts, which ultimately rushes to a grandiose conclusion. (4:45)

The first of four American Folk Rhapsodies, this superb work, originally written in 1948, is a wonderful example of the exceptional writing/arranging skills of Clare Grundman. Including: My Little Mohee (more commonly known as OnTop of Old Smokey), Shantyman's Life, Sourwood Mountain and Sweet Betsy from Pike, this is an outstanding, proven work for both concert and contest.
