Appalachian Dances - James Curnow

Intriguing modes, authentic rhythms and vivid orchestrational contrasts are hallmarks of James Curnow's masterfully-crafted Appalachian Dances. The enchanting authentic Appalachian fiddle melodies are a musical treasure well worth reviving and bringing to the concert band stage. Snap rhythms recall the early heritage of hill country music in the first movement, which is followed by a richly harmonized air. The piece concludes with a rollicking third movement. Hiking the trail takes rigorous tolls on the body and the mind, but there is no greater feeling than taking the final steps of such a journey. Appalachian Expedition pays tribute to the individuals who have braved the elements and have shown the dedication necessary to achieve this monumental goal.

Appalachian Folk Song Suite - William G. Harbinson

In the style of the revered Holst and Vaughan Williams suites, William Harbinson has crafted an exciting band piece by using Appalachian folk songs that is destined to be a contest repertoire piece for years to come. Moderate in difficulty and imaginatively scored, the three movements (fast - slow - fast) of this charming suite make delightful use of such tunes as Matthy Groves, Soldier Boy for Me, Edward and The Rebel Soldier. Appalachian Journey - Brant Karrick

The Appalachians represented one of America's first frontiers, and frontier music became one of the first truly American forms of musical expression. Based on traditional fiddle tunes, Appalachian Journey combines four folk songs, providing players and the audience with a real toe-tapping treat! The melodies included are: "After the Battle of Aughrim" and "Lord Mayo I," both Irish in origin, and "Bonaparte Crossing the Rocky Mountains" along with "Whiskey Before Breakfast," adapted from the old-time fiddling tradition.
