Insurrection - Gary P. Gilroy

Insurrection was composed as a potential concert opener for intermediate band. It is a passionate work with driving and relentless motives that possess a nervous energy. The clashing dissonances heard throughout the work represent a clashing against authority as an insurrection is defined. The middle of the composition gives a short reprieve from the intense and driving rhythms of the outer sections of the work while still retaining moments of dissonance and conflict. A transition takes us back to the opening tempo and dissonant material that eventually makes its way to a triumphant coda.

Larry Clark's music refl ects a strong belief in the discipline and power of playing music as a means of encouraging character development in young people. Intenso, by Victor Lpez, is an exciting composition full of contrasts. Following a soft and solemn opening, thundering interruptions set the tone for the melody and intertwined percussive patterns. An aggressive display of emotions sparks the juxtaposition of bold and lyrical themes, leading to a powerful ending. A great addition to the concert band repertoire.

As a young man, Andrew Pearce had fond memories of playing cornet in the local Youth Brass Band, where he first experienced the power and beauty of brass music. After completing 'The Maestro' concertino for Philip Cobb, he decided to write a more gentle and lyrical piece for him, which paid homage to his musical roots in the Salvation Army. 'Interlude' is ideal for a proficient solo cornet player in any brass band: tuneful, reflective and elegiac with lots of expression.
