Hymns and Carols - Harrie Janssen

The Christmas fantasy Hymns and Carols is based on a number of relatively unknown carols. Alongside three English Christmas carols, this composition includes a fragment of a Gregorian chant, a Marian antiphon (Salve Regina), and a Russian Carol. A characteristic feature of this last song is the recurring motif that symbolises the bells chiming to welcome in the New Year. The English carols represent the more lyrical part of this fantasy. The piece has a majestic ending, which returns to the aforementioned Salve Regina, a hymn to the Virgin Mary.

Hymns And Dances II - J. Slothouwer

In 1990 Jochem Slothouwer composed Hymns and Cances II. This work for symphonic band and harp (ad libitum) is based on Hymns and Dances I for piano, mixed choir and percussion. The compostition is based on the contrast between hymnlike melodies and dance music episodes. The work, in five connected parts, seems to look for a reconciliation of both melodic and rythmical elements. The initial theme with the horns and the answer of the band form the base of the first part.The second part, charcterized by a vitorous dance rhythm, is dominated by the percussionn and syncopated motifs with the brass. A melody with the euphoniums almost imperceptibly slips into the ensemble and gradually gets to the foreground. The dance and the hymn reach a real climax interrupted by a short and dark intermezzo (part three). The clear sonority of part four, a fiery tarantella with many small byt virtuoso solos, is a new contras. The final adagio reuses the previously developed ideas of part one and ends in sheer ecstasy.

Hymns from the Rig Veda - Gustav Holst

A century ago, James Causley Windram, then band director of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers (and later the Coldstream Guards) asked Gustav Holst if he would transcribe some of the composer's Hymns from the Rig Veda for military band. Always a band advocate, Holst readily agreed. In this thoroughly characteristic suite, two of Windram's settings (Hymn of the Travellers and Battle Hymn) have been edited for modern instrumentation, while a third (Hymn to Manas) has been arranged by Jon Ceander Mitchell from Holst's original choral setting.

Hymnsong from Mannin Veen - Haydn Wood

Composed in 1933, Haydn Wood's classic work Mannin Veen: A Manx Tone Poemhas remained a staple in the wind band repertoire, currently appearing on over 20 state festival lists. The opening segment of the work is based on the folk hymn The Good Old Way.Robert Longfield has carefully adapted this stunning section as a stand-alone chorale scored for contemporary band instrumentation.

Hymnsong Variations - Elliot Del Borgo

THE VESPER HYMN is the work upon which this set of variations is based, and the fascinating twisting and turning of the melodic and harmonic material mixes wonderfully with very contemporary rhythmic involvement.
