Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the BronzeAge. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energeticoverture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel.

Highland Celebration - Alan Lee Silva

Written with the lilt and flavor of the Scottish Highlands, this original Alan Lee Silva piece is a joyous new addition to the concert band repertoire. The pulsing 6/8 rhythms are contrasted by momentary feelings of 3/4, as the melody floats over punctuated harmonies. This piece contains contrast, with a slower middle section featuring a divine flute melody, accompanied by the sound of "bagpipe" drones in the other voices. This grand Scottishstyle melody develops to a climax before the wistful return of the main theme, and an up-tempo coda completes the piece.

Take a delightful romp through the highlands with this tuneful and lively selection in the style of an Irish jig. The highlight of the piece is the light-hearted and tuneful melody that every section of the band gets to play. A thoroughly fun and refreshing change of pace for any concert program!
