Flight of the Griffin - Brian Balmages

This exciting new work is based on the griffin, a mythological creature native to India, having the head, legs, and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion. Starting with open 5ths in the clarinets, slight elements of Indian music are introduced as the work builds to its opening theme. A powerful middle section combines elements of chamber playing and full ensemble. The closing section represents the actual flight of the griffin, bringing the whole piece to a dramatic ending. Strongly consider this highly energetic composition!

Take to the skies as a vampire searches intently for his next victim in this exciting work. Using a minor key and repeated eighth notes, a sense of suspense and expectation is created. A shift to major keys provides the listener a momentary illusion of safety and well-being. This quickly ends with a return to the opening material as the chase ensues until dark skies prevail, the vampire emerges victorious and night comes to a close.

Flight of Valor - James Swearingen

This magnificent work based on the well-known hymn "It Is Well With My Soul", is respectfully dedicated to the heroes of United Flight 93 who tragically lost their lives in a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001. Reflective, intense, somber and inspiring are but a few of the words that best describe the emotional make-up of this stunning composition. Commissioned by the Somerset County (PA) Community Band and premiered on the occasion of the one-year anniversary, this piece is certain to become a standard in the repertoire of bands for many years to come.
