The city of Mantua holds significant historical importance for the southern Italy's region of Tyrol. In this dramatic work Otto M Schwarz tells the tale of the Tyrolian freedom fighter Andreas Hofer who was executed in Mantua in 1809. The composer follows the life of this great folk hero, from his humble beginnings as an innkeeper to his death. This piece has all the energy of an exciting adventure movie - just without the pictures, of course!

Manzara - Jacob de Haan

This work is named after the Turkish word for 'landscape': Manzara. The title describes the marshland in Rheinland-Pfalz, which in 150 years has gradually been transformed into a wild landscape through the harvesting of peat. Different musical elements such as fugues and rhythmical patterns, as well as beautiful melodic themes, depict several aspects of the evolution and occurrences of this region. An exciting and challenging concert or contest piece!

Maple Leaf Overture - Philip Sparke

Named after the leaf displayed on Canada's flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school's symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!
