The story of is set in Seville, Spain, in 1820. It is story of a passionate, fickle, gypsy girl, Carmen, who is one of six major roles in the opera. The story, in four acts, is action-packed, animated, flowing, and never uninteresting. Bizet was well acquainted with Spanish folklore and folk music through his many visits to Spain. For , he composed a score that is rhythmical, tuneful, and characteristic of the gypsy lifestyle. The adaptation for concert band is a suite in four movements that retains the spirit of the original production.

Something has happened at the circus... the magician has hypnotized the entire audience and the circus isn't quite right. After a strange and frightening beginning, there is a gentle, yet peculiar rain that falls. A creepy theme in the tenor saxophone (interrupted by some terrifying screams) moves into the trapeze artists theme where they seem to encounter an accident. A short funeral procession leads back into the lone sneaky saxophone before the magic box is opened. This magic slowly evolves into a return to normality and back to The Greatest Show on Earth! This dazzling cornet/trumpet virtuoso piece was based on an air by Niccolo Paganini, and was originally composed for violin. Herbert L. Clarke was called the greatest cornetist of all time, and at the urging of another famous cornet soloist, Walter Rogers, Clarke was encouraged to write his own solos. His composition legacy includes over fifty solos, duets, and trios, as well as marches and works for concert band. may well be his best-known piece, and generations of brass players have worked to conquer and perform this masterwork.

The sensitive first movement features optional solos by the saxophone and clarinet. Following a soaring presentation by the full band, the soloist entwine in a duet to end the movement in a peaceful, reverent manner.
