The Tango is a well known and recognizable style of music that originated in Argentina in the mid 19th century. is a fresh and creative example of this style, as the music gives the effect of building intensity from beginning to end. Lots of imaginative and "tasty" percussion parts add to the effect. A fun, "surprise" ending brings this enjoyable and stylistic work to a close. This is a wonderful change of pace for any concert or festival performance!

Each year in July in the city of Pamplona, Spain, hundreds of people participate in the running of the bulls, which precedes the daily bullfights during the Fiesta de San Fermin. "El Toro" (The Bull) is an exciting piece with a Spanish flair that has moments of harmonic tension and drama with strong melodies and countermelodies. An exciting way to explore 3/4 time, tension-and-release, and hemiolas, students can imagine the adrenaline of the run and the celebrations of the fiesta as they perform this tune. Ol! Electricity - Brian Balmages

Experience the thrill of a single electron racing through a circuit at mind-boggling speeds! The wild ride begins immediately with two sets of bells creating an invigorating metallic backdrop. The intensity continues until a blackout occurs without warning, shutting down power to the entire circuit. The simple effect of a water gong creates the effect of a machine grinding to a halt. The circuit soon becomes live again as the electron races on. Absolutely stunning!

Elegy Cadenza - Glen Gillis

The opening section is free and segues to a lyrical and mournful melody, that also segues to another cadenza, followed by the finale-a fast bop style section. It portrays emotions of loss and celebration, and the cherishing of many memories. The phrasing, alternating meters, glisses and pitch bending, and wide performance range provide interest and challenges for the soloist. Elegy for Band - Albert O. Davis

This lovely composition, which focuses on legato playing from all sections, was originally titled Serenade for Summer. It was composed as a tribute to a young girl who met with an untimely death and is intended to show two realities: the sorrow at her passing and the joy that her youthful spirit will survive. While devoid of false sentimentality, the composition touches the hope in all of us that we, too, will be remembered for our influence upon the lives of others. Technically not demanding, this will allow you to focus on your band's tone quality, balance and blend.
