This sensitive contemporary work was written in memory of a former teacher at a middle school that is now thought to be haunted. Crystal glasses help set the ethereal mood as the theme is developed and ultimately juxtaposed with two other themes presented later in the work. Extremely musical and emotional, yet approachable by younger bands. This is serious literature.

The final section is a mash-up of reels, including "Red Haired Boy," "Rodney's Glory," "Paddy on the Turnpike," "Rose Tree," and more. Escapades - Brian Balmages

Premiered at the 2005 Michigan Music Educators Conference, Escapades was commissioned by the Grand Valley State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the baton of Barry D. Martin, with Arthur Campbell as clarinet soloist. Since the premiere, it has been scheduled for additional performances in the United States and abroad. The piece gets its inspiration from the title, which can be defined as "a usually adventurous action that runs counter to approved or conventional conduct." This piece is a series of changing "escapades" (or variations) which develop and explore different aspects of the opening thematic material. The entire work builds into a free improvisational section before all elements are united in the final presto.

Escape from Dead Raider's Hollow - Jeremy Bell

"Escape from Dead Raider's Hollow" is a fast-paced adventure. Opening quietly, the introduction gradually builds in volume and energy up to a tempo change where the piece takes off and doesn't relent until the end. Combining rhythms of 3 over a pulse of 2 creates a hemiola effect that drives the piece forward, creating a feeling of anxiety and being chased. This is a bombastic, action-packed piece with loud percussive hits, huge brass, and soaring woodwinds that ends with a bang. (2:30)
