The unusual combination of children's choir and symphonic wind band is wonderfully exciting, and To the Stars! provides an incomparable performing experience for both band and choir, and is also technically demanding and challenging. After a rousing introduction, we hear a countdown to our rocket's 'blast off', and suddenly we are heading out to the planets where we meet aliens with blue eyes and pink ears! After a brief but terrifying skirmish with a black hole we head off to a 'world of many wonders', and as we leave our solar system behind, the piece finishes with a spectacular shout of 'Fly with us - to the stars!'.Duration: 10.00

Parts only. This work was commissioned by the Besses O' Th' Barn Band for soloist James Gourlay, with funds from the Musicians' Union. The melodic patterns of the concerto are based on traditional, often classical modes. A three-note motif forms the basis of the first and third movements whilst the second begins with a slower version of the main theme. Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay. Holst composed this short, light-hearted but tuneful work in 1932, while on a visit to the USA, for Nathaniel Shilkret's concert jazz band. He was asked to use a folk tune but invented one of his own. The piece was not performed and remained in manuscript. This version for wind band was arranged by John Boyd with the approval of Imogen Holst. Duration: 5.00

This piece by Thierry Deleruyelle is based on one of the most significant events in the history of coal mining; the catastrophe at Courrieres, Northern France. It took place on 10th March 1906 and is considered the worst mining accident in Europe and the second most significant in the world. This work is both emotional and spectacular and tells in 7 contrasting sections the catastrophe that occurred. This version for wind band was commissioned on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the listing of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Mining Basin as a UNESCO World Heritage site.Duration: 7.15

A Fantasy on Motifs of Giuseppe Verdi. The overture to Giuseppe Verdi's 1862 opera La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) has remained standard repertoire for orchestras around the world. In this imaginative work for winds, Jay Bocook pays homage to the mastery of Verdi and begins with the ominous 3-note fate theme from the overture. Throughout the piece melodies are recast and harmonies are embellished, culminating in an exhilarating conclusion where the final seven bars quote Verdi's original almost identically. Cariad, a Welsh word meaning 'true love', 'great love', is a composition by Welsh composer Gareth Glyn, featuring six folksongs based on the theme of love: Dacw Nghariad (There's my love); Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn (Watching the White Wheat); Mae Nghariad I'n Fenws (My Love is a Venus); Y Deryn Pur (The Message Bird); Tra Bo Dau (While Two Remain); Hen Ferchetan (The Old Spinster). Originally composed for Children's Choir and Orchestra, the composer then revised it for orchestra, on which this arrangement for Concert/Wind Band has been adapted. The contemporary setting brings a special lift and expression of joy to this unique folksong setting.
