£20.95Concerto For Timpani And Band (Concert Band - Score Only) - Jacob, Gordon
The nature of the timpani means that musical development is rhythmic rather than tonal. In the first movement, a broad theme is announced by the timpani themselves, and immediately echoed and modified by the full wind band. Material is embroidered by woodwinds and developed by the soloist. The second movement (Adagio) is virtually an aria in which we are left with an expressive mood conjured from the timpani themselves. The last movement is a romp - characteristic use of quasi-folk material is well suited to the band and the rhythmic characteristics of the timpani are highlighted.

Extra score only. The idea for this suite came from left-over thoughts from a projected version of The Beggar's Opera, which failed to come to fruition. When John Gay assembles the music for The Beggar's Opera in 1727, he used popular tunes of the day and Dr. Pepusch provided orchestral accompaniments. More recently, Frederic Austin and Benjamin Britten have been amongst many composers who have adapted these melodies to their own purposes. Duration: 15 mins. It opens slowly and majestically and, after a climax, includes a section in free time for the trumpets and a cadenza for the euphonium. A lively, toe-tapping allegro follows with a central legato melody and a final flourish that recalls the opening fanfares. Parts only. This work was commissioned by the Besses O' Th' Barn Band for soloist James Gourlay, with funds from the Musicians' Union. The melodic patterns of the concerto are based on traditional, often classical modes. A three-note motif forms the basis of the first and third movements whilst the second begins with a slower version of the main theme. Near the end there is an elaborate and technically demanding cadenza. The wind band orchestration is by James Gourlay. VIZCAYA (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Vinter, Gilbert - Lamb, Kevin
Extra Score. Vizcaya, in common with some other of Vinter's 'lighter' pieces started life as an orchestral work. Always interested in national music of other countries Gilbert wrote an atmospheric piece Fete Basque describing a festival in the Basque region of South-West France. This intoxicatingly optimistic piece, full of Mediterranean sunshine, has been arranged for wind band by Kevin G. Lamb.
