Columbus Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father's footsteps, and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route, but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship, called the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, which he sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the 'New World' - he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvo??k's 9th Symphony 'Aus der neuen Welt' forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck, mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503, he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds, for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid. 09:00

Concertino for Xylophone Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

This composition was commissioned by "Koningin Wilhelmina Wamel" on the occasion of its one hundred year anniversary. That it is a composition for xylophone and concertband lies in the fact that Harmony has a very talented, young percussion player in the person of Barry Jurjes. The piece is both melodically and harmonically based on four notes (C - Dflat - F - G). The structure is divided into four parts: slow - fast - slow - fast. 08:00

Concerto for Trombone Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Concerto for Trombone" was written especially for J?rgen van Rijen, the solo trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. It is a composition without a story, consisting of four overlapping parts. The solo part was not written for J?rgen van Rijen technical skills, but rather for his expressive technique in the higher registers. According to Jan Bosveld, J?rgen van Rijen has additional merits that distinguish him from all other trombonists. "Concerto for Trombone" was premiered at the International Music Festival in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. The Repr?sentations Orchester des Schweizer Armeespiel, conducted by Christopher Walter, accompanied him. This composition was made financially possible by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI), department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Special thanks goes to mr. Bert Aalders, director of the MUI. 14:15

Consolat de Mar Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Consolat de Mar is an uplifting Spanish paso doble, expertly crafted to make it an ideal concert opener. The introduction and the following runs convey the pride of the Spanish character. The trio develops a gentle melody that provides a nice contrast to a solemn march-like passage. Dance music at its best! 05:45

Consolation Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Wer nur den lieben Gott l?sst walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled 'Trostlied' literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach's use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan's arrangement the choral is heard twice, once, alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time, without interruption, reflecting the composer's original intention - a song of consolation. 0:03:10

Cowboy Suite Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

In the tripartite 'Cowboy Suite' Alan Laken takes us to the Wild West, the domain of cowboys, indians, trappers and other fortune hunters. Around 1890 the west coast of America was reached, which in effect meant the end of the Wild West. Its stories, however, survived and have been a source of inspiration for many books, films, and, of course, music. Some characters, such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Buffalo Bill are forever linked to these tales. In the 'Cowboy Suite' we first hear the 'Hoedown'. At the end of an exhausting workday the labourers used to lay down their tools, among others the 'hoes' and spontaneously began to play music on the instruments which they then possessed (guitars, fiddles, and banjos) and to dance. After being jolted on the 'Wagon Trail' we reach the third part, the 'Cowboy Roundup'. In this last part it becomes clear that as a cattle driver it is imperative to stay firmly seated in the saddle. As the cattle are rounded up, i.e. driven together, spectacular things happen. 04:45
