A Strange Party, consisting of the following parts; Dino's Rock, Waltz of the Ardvark, Turtle and March of the Black Spider, is to be played with a minimum of 4 wind instruments. This piece is very well suited for a contest.

This suite is based on 4 american folksongs.1. 'Go tell it on the Mountain' - A light swinging negro spiritual telling in many ways: 'Our Lord Jesus Christ is born'.2. 'Sweet Betsy from Pike' - This is the story of the girl who crossed the big prairie with her brother Mike. The setting has a reminiscene of the French 'Musette Waltz' because it was said that Betsy originally came from Paris.3. 'The Fiddler in the Rain' - This is the song from the play 'The Arkansas Traveller' which was very popular in Ohio in the 1850's.4. 'Johnny and Frankie' - This is the combination of 2 songs 'When Johnny comes home' and 'Frankie and Johnny'. The lyrics of the songs have nothing in common, but the two melodies seem to be made to blend perfectly.

Paganini Variations - Niccolò Paganini
A lot of composers, such as Brahms, Rachmaninov, Lutoslavski and many others used the Caprice nr.24 for violin solo by Paganini, to write a series of variations. This time that favourite theme has been used to write a series of variations for band. This work, commissioned by SAMO Nederland lasts about 9 minutes.The theme is followed by eight variations and a coda. Two quick variations alternate twice with a slower variation, whereas the final is written in a waltz tempo leading to a magestic coda as conlusion. All variations are played without interruption.

£140.80Cinquantieme - Serge Lancen
Cinquantieme, the fiftieth composition for symphonic band by Serge Lancen, was composed in the fall of 1993. It is written in an overture form and built on four distinct themes. First there is a merry and dynamic March, followed by a Waltz of the same character; then comes a small melody and finally the March turns up again, but this time it ends with a triumphant theme. The overture is dedicated to Alain Thiery and his Symphonic Band of Pont-Ste-Marie/La-vau/Creney. It was premiered during the gala concert closing the 120th anniversary celebrations of that band. The number in the title 'Cinquantieme' (Fiftieth), indicates the richness of Lancen's wind band repertoire. Fascinated by the symphonic band's extremely rich range of tone colours, Lancen has devoted all his talent and passion to it. For this type of orchestra he has written symphonies, rhapsodies, several concertos and even religious compositions with choirs and soloists.

Jef Penders (1928), the 'Valencian Dutchman', had already enriched the lighter original band repertoire with several fine and creative dance melodies such as a cha-cha-cha, a charleston, a reggae and a waltz. This time, or rather 'today' (ahora), the Spanish sunny climate inspired him to compose this lively and inspiring conga. Originally the conga was a semiritual dance of the Antilles which also soon spread in the New-Orleans area. We bet it will give you the heebie-jeebies.

'Music for a Fanciful Story' was commissioned by the Symphonic band Mokuyougomi in Japan to celebrate the twenty-fourth anniversary of its annual concert. 'Music for a Fanciful Story' consists of four parts: Overture, Waltz, Hymn and Finale. There is no concrete story, but the composer expects you to play this tune, imaging its original story by yourself.
