From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear.Western Girl: A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale.Just a ballad: A ballad in pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A').Play the Game: An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here.San Diego: A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling.Final Dance: Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style. Based on the Naval Hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," this work opens with an aggressive fanfare which leads to the hymn, stated in a chorale fashion. The first variant is Allegro and features interplay between rhythmic figures in the percussion section with mirrored polychords in the woodwinds. The second variant is reminiscent of the music of Erik Satie and features a beautiful pairing of flute and oboe solos supported by strong countermelodies played by the horns. A third variant in 6/8 provides another interesting point of view before the work closes in Maestoso fashion. Another Mark Williams masterpiece! Duration: 6.15

A Scottish Fantasy. The symphonic poem Loch Ness consists of five through-composed impressions of this mysterious Scottish Lake. I) The Lake at Dawn - calm, static, sonorous blocks depict the troubled opaque water surface and the enormous depth of the Lake at daybreak. II) Slowly the rising early-morning mist reveals the distant ruins of Urquhart Castle, represented by a solemn theme in the trombones which is taken over by the full band, thus evoking the illustrious past of this fortress besieged so many times. III) Inverness: Bagpipes and Tourists - the music takes us down to the town of Inverness where the first tourists mark the slow but steady start of a new season to the sound of a Scottishmelody. IV) Storm - suddenly a heavy wheater breaks: fierce gusts of wind and heavy showers transform the erstwhile calm surface into an obscure and whirling mass of water, and clouds rapidly passing over offer an eery scene. V) Conclusion - storm and rain gradually decrease and when everything is quiet again we are granted a last view of the Lake in its full glory. Duration: 12.15

As the first musicians come into view the volume continues to grow and we hear many different layers of melody, counter-melody, and rhythm. Soon the band is upon us and we feel like we can almost reach out and touch the music. Then, the band passes and the full ensemble sound begins to retreat into the distance, the volume and complexity both diminish until we are once again left with the sound of retreating drums, and finally, silence.
