This spirited march begins with a dynamic "echo" introduction that leads to the memorable main theme. All sections share the spotlight before transitioning into the contrasting B section with a minor, more lyrical theme. The coda features a variation of the echo introduction before ending in a dynamic fashion. The vitality of this new work makes an ideal concert opener that both the band and audience will enjoy.

The beautiful, well-known folk song "Arirang" is featured in this creative adaptation by Mark Williams. Colorful percussion writing and solos for alto saxophone and flute help to establish the tone of this very interesting arrangement. John Barnes Chance also used this folk song, named for Arirang Hill, near Seoul, in the concert band classic Variation on a Korean Folk Song. £58.50Belle of the Ball for Band - Leroy Anderson
Like most of Leroy Anderson's efforts, "Belle of the Ball" is light, effervescent, and devoid of conflict or disharmony. Anderson looked upon the piece as a modern-day American revival -- or revitalization -- of the Viennese waltz tradition. Having said that, the main theme sounds rather unlike a Strauss waltz, but the voice of Tchaikovsky is evident in its playful, fantasy-like character. The melody is rhythmic and comes in short groups of notes, beginning with two notes, then three, then expanding further; the music skates along elegantly. The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson's gentle belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. Versions for band and the original orchestral scoring are available.

is a lyrical ballad that presents the band with many opportunities for expressive playing. The theme is lightly presented by the flutes, then followed by another statement in the trumpets with added textures in the accompaniment. The second statement features some interesting harmonies by the woodwinds before leading into a very expressive final presentation of the melody with an added woodwind countermelody. A stirring variation and development leads to a very effective and climactic ending where melodic motives are passed from section to section as the piece winds down to a quiet, reflective conclusion.

In early December 2011, a powerful wind storm passed through Southern California, leaving thousands without electricity and severe damage to many mature trees. Written during this event, this piece uses sharply syncopated rhythms, the key of C minor and prominent percussion to convey the mood that prevailed during the storm. As is always the case, calm, clear weather returned and the lyrical slow section in E-flat major brings that to mind. users will recognize the chorale in bars 49--56 as a variation of the B-flat chorale that appears on page 44 of Book 1. Engelberg Variations was composed for the Hibriten High School Band in Lenoir, North Carolina and is based on the hymn, "When In Our Music God Is Glorified." It opens with a flourish of activity from the brass and percussion. This gives way to the statement of the theme set in a lovely woodwind chorale featuring flutes and oboes. A lyrical trumpet solo takes the band to a soaring tutti statement of the theme which gets interrupted by a percussion-filled staccato variation. Fragments of the theme are then heard in fun variations juxtaposed against the original theme in augmentation. is destined to become a classic!
