This moving new work is inspired by the wild Spanish Barb horses of Abaco, whose existence has been known since the colonization of the Bahamas. , in contemporary overture-style, includes reminiscent horse-hoof sounds intertwined with the energetic melodic components built upon the rhythmic foundation. Two lovely English carols are paired together to create a very mature sounding arrangement for young players. After a brief introduction the flute section plays "What Child is This?" with a light accompaniment. The full ensemble soon enters for a rich rendition of this classic carol. "The Coventry Carol" is then presented by the flutes and clarinets in 3/4 meter before shifting to a more dramatic 4/4 maestoso for full band. Correlated with , page 12. Featuring two melodic motives that are developed texturally and rhythmically throughout the piece, Vistas begins in a light, reflective manner before gradually building into a majestic contrapuntal statement by the brass. A driving percussion introduction begins the Vigoroso section and provides the rhythmic foundation for the second "Vista." This minor setting of the initial motives provides an exciting variation that features a variety of meter changes and syncopated passages. A restatement of the initial motives with the driving rhythmic accompaniment begins an extended conclusion that brings the piece to a dynamic finish.

Inspired by the hope, opportunity, freedom, and adventure of the formative years of the United States, The Trail West includes excerpts from selections as diverse as "Promised Land," "The Girl I Left Behind," "The Riddle Song," and a hauntingly beautiful Dakota Sioux melody. Two fiddle tunes, "The Arkansas Traveler" and "Old Dan Tucker," remind us of the important role music played in lifting the pioneer spirits. Written in two distinct sections, , by Robert Sheldon, opens with a lyrical theme reminiscent of many much-loved American hymns and gospel tunes. Important parts appear in all parts, but feature the bells, chimes, and euphonium. The second half of the piece is a British-style march, starting with a brief percussion interlude, and gradually adding wind instruments until the full band finishes the march with all the enthusiasm it can muster!
