Elegie - Peter Meechan
The opening unaccompanied passage of this work was originally written as a short memorial piece for saxophone, but was later adapted as the basis of this more developed work for solo euphonium or trombone.The work uses a variation structure, with both the soloist and the accompaniment changing throughout the piece; the harmony, rhythm and melodic lines leading somewhere new and different each time they are heard - similar to the way our memories of a person often wander in different directions, but are still always focused on that person.

'Courte Ouverture' as translated from the French means 'Short Overture'. Written for a medium level ensemble, it commences with a high trill in the piccolo followed by a flourish in the flutes before the main theme is introduced. This primary melody can be heard throughout the selection. It then transitions into an almost hymn-like middle section before an accelerando takes us back to the flute flourish and main theme. This piece uses the music ensemble to its fullest. Memorable melodies and traditional harmonies are spread throughout the instrumentation. Released as a charity single in aid of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, this sublime work was composed by Debbie Wiseman OBE and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death in September 2022. This tender and contemplative piece was played many times during the BBC's live coverage of the ceremonies across ten days of national mourning; and the full three-minute piece was played at the end of the Queen's State funeral, following Kirsty Young's emotional final words, and accompanied by a poignant and beautiful montage of images from the events of the day. The piece is now available for wind bands through this arrangement by Andrew Wainwright, with permission kindly granted by Debbie Wiseman. The majestic Evergreen Fanfare (Sean Brown) was written in Autumn 2010 and is aimed at a young wind band. The composer writes: 'My goal with Evergreen Fanfare was to have the quality of sound and music that a more advanced band work (or even an orchestral work) would have, but at the difficulty level suitable for an advanced middle band or young high school band. My aim is to always write music that is pleasing to listen to for both the performers and audience alike, musical experts or novices alike.' VIEW SCORE PDF This rousing and pulsating work by Kevin Norbury forms part of the suite A Renaissance Christmas, also published by BrookWright Music. It is based on three popular carols - In Dulci Jubilo, Good Christian men, rejoice! and Ding-dong merrily on high. This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S.Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In Dulci Jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. VIEW SCORE PDF This beautiful and serene setting of the well known carol Quem Pastores Laudavere features as part of a suite by Kevin Norbury entitled A Renaissance Christmas (available from BrookWright Music). This 14th-century melody was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. VIEW SCORE PDF This exciting and uplifting processional is the first movement of a festive suite, A Renaissance Christmas, written by Kevin Norbury for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School Wind Symphony. Based on Personent hodie (On this day earth shall ring), this is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). The tune is presented twice with accompanying, related melodic material.
